GREAT news for all who are looking for good broadband deal this holiday season. LCD TV sets lah, Apple iTouch lah, Nitendo Wii lah, xBox lah .. Wah liaoz eh, tones of good stuffs waiting for Broadband takers to pick up.
Perhaps, unknowingly, broadband take-up rate has jumped up to 75% from 62% last year. Not only the take-up rate has upped, the broadband speed has upped too. Subscribers are now more appreciate the high speed broadband that the providers are providing. Not to mention the Government-supported Next-Generation National Broadband Network by 2015 (wah liao not this topic again?)
Quoted from Strait Times:
"Experts say the market will only get tighter, especially with 3.5G mobile broadband plans now offered by all three cellphone operators SingTel, StarHub and MobileOne. New network, new uses.
The broadband adoption rate may further increase if competition heats up even more. That is the aim of the ultra-fast broadband network now in the works, say government policy planners. To ensure no single telco controls the network, different parts of it will be run by separate companies. One will lay the telecom cables, another will operate the network switches, while many more service providers will lease this infrastructure to provide online services.
This, the Government believes, will encourage more newcomers to the market.
Analysts say the new network is a good move, after years of domination by SingTel and StarHub. However, how many newcomers there will be is still unknown, they add. One problem is Singapore's small market size, which may not be able to afford another handful of big telcos.
Another is incumbent telcos. As part of the 12 consortia bidding for the project, they are also in the race to build the new network. Newcomers may stay away if these incumbents win and are seen to still hold significant market power, say experts.
Foong King Yew, research director at analyst firm Gartner, said: 'All we can say is that it (the new network) lowers the barriers to entry for services providers. As to how many will come in, that is another issue altogether.'"
Sometimes, I was thinking, do we need so much high-bandwidth network? The only few purposes that one can think of to utilise high bandwidth is to watch movies or video, download music over internet. Hey, if this content aren't free? We will somehow find sources that are free but ... ... So contradicting right?
Okie.. my South Park Episodes 12 should be ready now.
